Dear Grands,

Revelation 4:1-4, “After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.”
2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne.
3 And He who was sitting was like a jasper stone and a sardius in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald in appearance.
4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on their heads.”

The Key to unlocking the Revelation is in chapter one, verse nineteen: “Write, thererfore, the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall take place after these things.”

1.With the sound of the Voice in 4:1, we enter the third and final phase of the Revelation. The Apostle John is lifted up into Heaven; and just as the seven churches were real churches, they also symbolize periods of Christian history; so, John is real, yet he symbolizes the Rapture of the Church! The troubles of the Church are now left behind, and the Church is allowed to glimpse the LORD Himself, who has been her Refuge and Strength throughout the ages.

2.The LORD’s Church is then raptured (caught up) and carried through the “open door.” The LORD will then have delivered His Church“from the wrath to come” (1 Thes. 1:10). The earthly church is not any, particular religious denomination; rather, it is the entire group of “born again” believers, who are there with Christ. The earthly Church is not seen after Revelation 3!

3.The Apostle John then beholds the glories of Heaven (4:1-11). There are three heavens in existence: the atmosphere is the first; the planets and stars are the second; and the Heaven that John beheld is the third. He visualized Heaven and heard the LORD’s voice. Ellicott says, “The Voice of Christ has many tones; but none give an ‘uncertain sound.” The LORD’s Voice is always preeminent!

4.Most importantly, however, is it that John saw the LORD (1:2b-3: “…and behold, a throne was standing in Heaven, and One sitting on the throne. And He who was sitting was like a jasper stone and a sardius in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald in appearance.”)

(1)The LORD is our Righteousness: the Pure and Holy One.
(2)The LORD is our Redemption: He is their Judgment.
(3)The LORD is our Rest and Security.

Is the LORD your righteousness? Or are you relying on your own goodness?
Is the LORD your redemption? Either He is, or you are facing His judgment!
Is the LORD your Rest, your Security? If He is neither, you have neither.
Give your life to Him! Trust Him to be your Salvation. There is no other.

Heartily in Christ Jesus,

Dear Grands,

Daniel 9:24-27, “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place.
25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.
26 “Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.
27 “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”

Jeremiah 30:7, “’Alas! for that day is great, There is none like it; And it is the time of Jacob’s distress, But he will be saved from it.”

The purpose of the tribulation is one of Divine Judgment upon the Jewish nation. The
nature of the tribulation is a period of divine wrath and judgment. The Scriptures teach
that God’s wrath is not directed against His Church!

1.“For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, (1 Thes. 5:9).
2.“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
(Rom. 8:1).

The Tribulation is a time of wrath and judgment throughout its seven years. The Scriptures teach that the Church will be delivered from the wrath of God, and is “…to wait for His Son from Heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come” (I Thes. 1:10).

The Antichrist will reign during the seven years of Tribulation (cf. Rev. 13:7). Everyone will be in subjection to him. Were the Church to be on Earth during that time, it would be in subjection to the Antichrist rather than the Christ. That is why the Church will have been Raptured prior to the Tribulation.

The Thessalonian believers were in confusion regardin the resurrection. Paul wrote them that believers who were alive at Christ’s coming for His own would have no advantage over believers who had died. If the Thessalonians had believed the Church would go through the Tribulation, they would either have rejoiced that some had missed the Tribulation, or would have reasoned that it was better to be with the Father in Heaven than to suffer on the Earth.

The New Testament epistles are amazingly silent regarding the Tribulation. This silence itself argues for the Church’s absence during the Tribulation era. Further, the Tribulation foretold by the Old Testament prophets always relates to Israel (Malachi 4:5-6).

While unconverted, unbelieving Gentiles will doubtlessly experience the Great Tribulation along with the nation of Israel, the absence of any Gentiles in the fiery furnace experience (Dan. 3:22ff) serves to emphasize that the Great Tribulation is primarily a judgment upon the Jews for their having rejected Jesus Christ as their Messiah.

This is why I pray urgently and witness fervently that people may come to know Jesus!
Do you know Him? He is your only hope of escaping Hell and Earth’s most tumultous era! Ask Him today to forgive you of your sins. Life is uncertain. Jesus is certain!

Heartily in Christ Jesus,

Dear Grands,

Revelation 3:14-22, “”To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this:
15 ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot.
16 ‘So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.
17 ‘Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,
18 I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.
19 ‘Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.
20 ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.
21 ‘He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
22 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'”

The Church at Laodicea was a Complacent Church. Laodicea itself was a wealthy commercial center, a place of literature and science. A local medical school had developed a “Phrygian powder,” composed of a strangely-colored clay from the nearby hills. It was then mixed with spikenard and exported throughout the Roman Empire as a medical salve for eyes and ears.

Jupiter and Zeus were worshipped by the local population; however, the most prominent Phrygian god was Men-Karou. The Laodicean Age was conformed to the popular will of the people. Instead of the Church being led by the pastor, it was led by a domineering mob. Laodicea means “rule of the people.” At the onset of the 20th Century, the Laodicean Church Age merged with the Philadelphian Church Age. Thus, the problems of both ages will extend to the time of the Rapture.

With the onset of the Philadelphian Age, humanistic thought permeated the heart of the Church. The Laodicean Church Age suffered the cost of complacency, a carry-over from earlier times –and one that would not go away!

The LORD’s condemnation centers on spiritual complacency (3:15-16, “’…you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth’”). Christ will simply not be tolerated! He demands choice! “A corrupt church may still be a church” –and Christ will still love it– but the continual rejection of His Love must be met with Divine justice!

The LORD stipulates, “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent” (3:19). So it is with a Godly parent! But note further, the Great Invitation: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me” (3:20). Note that the invitation is personal, rather than corporate!

God’s final affirmation is also personal, “He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne” (3:21).

What is contained in “the Revelation,” is not of private interpretation. It is intended for our instruction, reproof, and conviction. Those out of step with His revelation may suffer for it. Simon Peter says, “For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the Gospel of God?” (I Peter 4:17).

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Rev. 3:22).

Heartily in Christ Jesus,

Dear Grands,

Revelation 3:7-13, “”And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says this:
8 ‘I know your deeds. Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not denied My name.
9 ‘Behold, I will cause those of the synagogue of Satan, who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie– I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and make them know that I have loved you.
10 ‘Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
11 ‘I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown.
12 ‘He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.
13 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

The Church at Philadelphia was The Commissioned Church. It was the next-to-the-last of the Seven Churches. Historically, this timeframe covers the years of A.D. 1800 to 1900. These are the days of the Great Evangelistic meetings conducted by men like D. L. Moody, J. Wilbur Chapman, W. P. Nicholson, R. A. Torrey and Billy Sunday. They drew massive crowds throughout the world –crowds to whom they faithfully declared the Gospel of Christ, and witnessed thousands come to saving faith in Jesus!

This era was also the era of missionary expansion. China Inland Mission, the British and Foreign Bible Society, the American Bible Society and many others were organized during this time. Alongside the 600-plus mission societies marched some missionaries of historical note: Hudson Taylor, Adoniram Judson, Luther Rice, David Livingstone, Robert Morrison, William Carey, George Fox and Sir Wilfred Grenfell.

Simultaneously, these organizations and their godly leadership, the Church was subjected to internal persecution from the philosophies of men like Hegel, Darwin, Marx, and Freud. Never-theless, the LORD promised: “He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says this –“ The Church, therefore, experiences a reprieve from the onslaughts of Satan and his minions.

The LORD commends the Church (3:8), denounces the adversaries as “The Synagogue of Satan” (3:9-11), affirms the Security of the Church and those who hold to His Name (3:12-13).
The Commission given to the Church has never been rescinded. Those who cleave to His Name and His Commission will forever be protected and extolled for His Glory! Are you one of those? I sincerely pray that you are!

Heartily in Christ Jesus,

Dear Grands,

Revelation 3:1-6, “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: “I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.
2 “Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God.”
3 ‘So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore, if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you.
4 ‘But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.
5 ‘He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.
6 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

The Church at Sardis can well be called The Camouflaged Church. Isn’t this what we do when we’ve been charged with corruption? We hide! The overall history of the Church parallels the history of Sardis.
Having been well-founded, the subtle intrusions of false doctrines and worldliness render the Church virtually helpless and unproductive. The singular element for renewal resides within the Church herself in the Person of the Holy Spirit. He has not departed, but His effectiveness through the Church has greatly diminished.

Observe the LORD’s accusation “I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God… Therefore, if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you” (3:1-3).

“The Sardian people were idolaters: they feigned worship of God, but worshipped Cybele, whose worship was the most debasing of character. “Sins of the foulest and darkest impurity were committed on…festival occasions” (Tait).

Yet, while the LORD admonished them to strengthen what remained, there were a paltry few who had true life and spirituality within them. Otherwise, He would not have admonished them as He did. Not only did the LORD possess knowledge of the Sardian church, neighbors all around also knew the Sardis’ reputation.

Remember how we used to hide things from our parents and pretend that we didn’t know things we truly knew? Somehow, they always knew. So it is with God; only He knows infinitely more about us than our parents –even more than we know about ourselves! So it is with churches. We often pretend to be what we are not, yet the LORD knows who and what we truly are! Remember the old song we use to sing?

I cannot hide from God; however I may try;
Though mountains cover me, I cannot escape His eye;
I’ve wandered far and near, and yet His voice I hear:
I know that I can never hide from God.

As we “come clean” with God, He forgives and blesses us. So, too, is He with His Church. We have a ministry far more vital than we know. May we freely cast off those things that drag us down and exault the LORD Jesus Christ in and through our daily lives. When “push comes to shove,” He’s all that truly matters!

Heartily in Christ Jesus,

(Dado III)
