Dear Grands,

Genesis 15:1-6, “After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, ‘Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; your reward shall be very great.’
2 Abram said, ‘O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’
3 And Abram said, ‘Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.’
4 Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, ‘This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.’
5 And He took him outside and said, ‘Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ And He said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’
6 Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.”

Did you ever become so excited in the asking of a question that you couldn’t take time for the answer? Something like, “What do you think about– ? I’ll tell you what I think!”

Far too many of us (including myself) tell the LORD what we want Him to do for us, without giving Him the opportunity to say, much less to do, what He has already planned for us. Sometimes we are so pre-determined with what we want that we fear hearing Him say what He is going to do.

Notice that in verse one, the LORD came to Abram, sheltering him from fear and promising him a reward. Then, two verses beyond (and one word short of 40), Abram allows the LORD to give His divine reply. How noble of Abram!

I sometimes enjoy watching members of Congress question personnel from various areas of responsibility in government. If you’ve watched carefully, you’ve heard questions asked, which the questioner obviously never wanted answered.

Such was the situation regarding Abram. Did he not know that the LORD was capable of even more than he asked? Do we also not know that there is no limit to what the LORD can do if we stay out of the way? Yet, we’ve pre-determined what we want, and live in the determination that that’s how it is going to be!

“And I am God… Even from eternity I am He, and there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?” (Isa. 43:12-13).

“I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.” Thus says the LORD, Who makes a way through the sea and a path through the mighty waters, Who brings forth the chariot and the horse, the army and the mighty man. They will lie down together and not rise again; they have been quenched and extinguished like a wick” (Isaiah 43:15-17). And it shall be so!

Heartily in Christ Jesus,
